Skin Toner: Homemade Vs. Store Bought

I expressed, in my previous post (Apple Cider Vinegar Skin Toner), my desire to compare my homemade toner vs. store-bought.

After a bit of research on the different toners available, I chose to compare my homemade toner with Origins™ A Perfect World™ Age-defense Treatment Lotion with White Tea. Don’t let the name fool you; it is a type of toner.

I chose to try Origins for 3 reasons. The first reason is its natural ingredients (Sephora has a great description of each ingredient).

The second reason is that it promotes preventative aging (never too early to start).

Thirdly, the reviews I read suggested that this product was worth the purchase.

I honestly wasn’t expecting a ton of difference in effectiveness (and for the most part there wasn’t), but the one thing I had noticed is that Origins™ seemed to remove more dirt.

I wish I had taken a picture of the cotton ball used with the Apple Cider Vinegar. There was virtually no dirt on the cotton ball used with the ACV toner.

Prior to using Origins™ I attributed the lack of gunk on my cotton ball to having already cleansed my face.

Since the ACV toner didn’t seem to remove much dirt, I’m not sure how the toner would work for someone with constant breakout problems.

For me it cleared up my chin, which had been breaking out for a couple of months.

I did not notice a difference in my pores. However, I have been using the Apple Cider Vinegar for my face the past week. I have noticed that the Origin’s toner has worked really well in preventing breakouts and keeping my skin protected. As I continue to use it, I haven’t noticed any real breakouts since first trying the toner.

Below is my comparison of the 2 toners.

ACV

Pros

Seemingly instant results

Inexpensive & easy to make

Reduced the size of my pores

Helps balance skins pH levels

Antibacterial properties

Seemed to clear up my breakouts

Organic

Oil & alcohol free

Cons

Smell isn’t pleasant

Didn’t seem to remove a ton of dirt

Make’s eyes burn if you get too close to your eyes with the cotton ball

Origins™

Pros

Pleasant smelling – citrus

Didn’t burn or dry out

Effectively cleaned out dirt from my pores

Face felt more hydrated

Protects skin from the elements

Oil & alcohol free

Natural Ingredients

Cons

Expensive; $24 at Sephora

Doesn’t seem to be organic

I personally liked Origins™, for all the pros I listed above. In saying so, I still feel the ACV toner was very effective. It just had a few trivial flaws.

Overall, I think they both work well. If the smell doesn’t bother you and cost is an issue, I would suggest using the ACV toner.

If you don’t mind spending the money, I would choose Origins™. It’s just a bit more pleasant, it seemed to clean out more dirt, and it helps fight aging.

Tell me your opinions. Have you used Origins™ or another brand’s toner that you like? Let me know in the comments below!

I always love to try new things. If there are other products you’re curious about, tell me about them. I may do a review/comparison on the product in a future post.
